Right now, we have these pretty mushrooms growing along the road to our house:

They’re waxcaps (genus Hygrocybe) – possibly the one known as witch’s hat, although I certainly don’t claim any expertise in mushroom identification. We won’t be frying any of them for a meal. It isn’t clear whether they’re edible, and no one is in any hurry to find out.

I used MycoKey to help with the identification. Even though it specializes in northern European mushrooms, it’s still a nifty little tool.


Bonus feature

As I was returning from my walk today, I saw our friendly black rat snake on its usual perch. I noticed its eyes had taken on a milky gray color, and it wasn’t as responsive as usual. I think it may be ready to shed its skin.
